The twin quakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck the northern regions of the country on Wednesday evening, leading to widespread destruction. In the aftermath of the tremors, Venezuela’s National Assembly president, Jorge Rodríguez, confirmed the death toll has reached at least 1,430. Additionally, around 3,200 people have sustained injuries, and over 3,100 are now homeless. Rescue operations are in full swing, with nearly 68,900 individuals reported missing by their families. Amidst the devastation, there have been moments of hope, such as the rescue of an 11-year-old boy from a collapsed structure in Caraballeda, bringing a glimmer of relief to the community.
The United Nations has estimated that the financial impact of the earthquakes amounts to approximately $6.7 billion, which represents about 6% of Venezuela’s GDP. This figure accounts for damage to homes and infrastructure, though it does not yet consider broader economic repercussions. Meanwhile, international aid has begun to pour in, with rescue teams and support arriving from countries such as the United States, Mexico, Brazil, France, the Netherlands, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom. The US has expressed its commitment to coordinating flights, medical assistance, and search-and-rescue operations.
To maintain order and assist in relief efforts, more than 14,000 military and police forces have been deployed to the affected zones. However, officials caution that access remains difficult in some areas due to extensive damage and ongoing safety concerns.
