The European Union has mandated changes for Google, requiring the tech giant to open up its Android platform and search services to foster greater competition in the digital market. This directive is part of a broader effort to diminish the dominance of major technology companies and provide consumers with a wider array of digital service options.
Under these new regulations, Google is obligated to make 11 features of the Android operating system available to competing developers of artificial intelligence. This move will allow rival AI assistants to utilize key device functions and respond to voice commands in a manner similar to Google’s Gemini assistant. These updates are slated to be included in a forthcoming Android update, expected to be rolled out by July 2027.
Additionally, Google is required to share some anonymized search data with AI firms and competing search services. This data-sharing is intended to help these companies enhance their own search-based offerings. However, before any data is shared, Google will have the right to evaluate whether the requesting companies meet cybersecurity and data protection standards. This aspect of the regulation is set to come into effect at the beginning of the next calendar year.
The European Commission has highlighted that these measures incorporate safeguards designed to protect user privacy and ensure device security, while simultaneously promoting increased competition in the realms of AI and online search. Despite these assurances, Google has expressed concerns, arguing that the imposed changes might compromise user privacy and security, even though the company had proposed alternatives to address the regulatory issues.
These directives are part of the EU’s Digital Markets Act, a legislative initiative aimed at reducing the market power of tech behemoths and expanding consumer choices in digital services. The Act represents a significant step in the EU’s ongoing efforts to regulate the technology sector and create a more balanced competitive environment.
