New faces being introduced into the squad include Northampton forward Alex Coles and Sale prop Asher Opoku-Fordjour. Seb Atkinson, Guy Pepper, and Jack van Poortvliet have also secured contracts this year after missing out previously. Daly’s exclusion is particularly striking given his ability to play multiple positions and past commendations from Borthwick. Nonetheless, Daly remains in contention for the larger World Cup squad, which will comprise 33 players.
The absence of Lawrence and Daly has intensified competition for places in England’s midfield and back-three. Atkinson is emerging as a favored choice for the inside-centre role, while Opoku-Fordjour’s versatility in playing both sides of the scrum enhances his appeal in the squad. The omission also extends to Courtney Lawes and Benhard van Rensburg, the latter having made his international debut during the summer. Lawes, however, is still available for selection after his return to England.
England’s central contracts are valued at approximately £150,000 per season, offering the coaching team increased influence over player preparation.
