In an unprecedented move, Ukraine has executed one of its largest drone offensives against Russia since the conflict began, with Russian officials reporting at least six fatalities and a significant blaze at a distribution warehouse near Moscow. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported intercepting 1,478 Ukrainian drones within a 24-hour span, marking it as the highest number recorded in a single day, although these figures remain unverified independently. Moscow’s Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, stated that approximately 600 drones targeted the Moscow area, with 201 reportedly being destroyed. Tragically, one individual lost their life in the region.
The fire erupted at a Wildberries distribution center near Podolsk, situated roughly 25 miles south of Moscow’s heart. This facility, sprawling over 250,000 square meters, suffered severe damage and was rendered inoperative, as per Ukraine’s military reports. Ukraine has been increasingly employing long-range drones to strike Russian military and economic targets situated far from the battlefront. Ukrainian officials claim that several Wildberries-associated facilities have been targeted due to their alleged involvement in military logistics operations.
These attacks underscore Ukraine’s advancing long-range strike capabilities, while Russia persists in heavily relying on drones and missiles for assaults on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. In addition, Russian attacks have resulted in at least seven fatalities in Ukraine, with victims in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. A missile strike on Kyiv left six injured and sparked fires, notably affecting a prominent book market where several businesses reportedly lost their entire inventory.
On another front, a Spanish fighter jet, part of a NATO patrol, reportedly downed a suspected Russian drone that strayed into Romanian airspace, according to NATO officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure, stating that Moscow had launched over 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine in the past week alone.
This surge in long-range weapon use by both nations elevates the risk of casualties and damage far from the front lines, signaling an alarming escalation in the ongoing conflict.
