Ceasefire Offers Respite After Thailand and Cambodia Suffer Worst Border Clashes in Years

A hard-won truce between Thailand and Cambodia has ushered in relief after five days of the region’s most deadly border fighting in over a decade. Fierce gun battles and artillery strikes over disputed lands left at least 36 dead and forced a massive exodus of civilians.
Talks mediated by Malaysia were crucial in ending violence over a strip of jungle and ancient ruins, a flashpoint inherited from colonial demarcations. Now, both militaries will meet to coordinate withdrawal and security in the contested zones.
While the ceasefire has stopped the shooting, the peace remains delicate. Both governments have issued warnings about instigating violence towards migrants, as nationalist anger remains high.
