Under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico is actively working to enhance its security cooperation with the United States, mending the previously strained relations that marked the era of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. A pivotal figure in this renewed partnership is Omar García Harfuch, the Security Cabinet coordinator, who has been instrumental in holding multiple discussions with top U.S. officials. These meetings have concentrated on intelligence sharing and combating organized crime, which, according to Mexican authorities, have facilitated quicker responses to criminal activities due to more rapid information exchanges.
The Sheinbaum administration has reported significant achievements, including the arrest of tens of thousands, the seizure of major weapons and drugs, and the dismantling of numerous clandestine drug labs. Additionally, Mexico has expedited the extradition of high-profile criminal suspects to the U.S., with officials noting a considerable reduction in fentanyl trafficking. This cooperative effort represents a departure from the policies of López Obrador, who had previously shut down a U.S. intelligence unit operating within Mexico and had imposed strict limitations on foreign security agents.
Relations between Mexico and the U.S. further soured during López Obrador’s tenure, notably after the 2020 arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos and subsequent disagreements over organized crime investigations. Tensions peaked in 2024 following reports that accused López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign of receiving drug-trafficking funds. Although these allegations did not lead to formal charges, they significantly eroded trust between the Mexican government and U.S. authorities.
Despite the progress in rekindling security ties, President Sheinbaum continues to emphasize the importance of Mexico’s sovereignty and the necessity for mutual respect in its dealings with the U.S. Her administration has also expressed disapproval of perceived attempts by U.S. officials to sway or fracture Mexico’s security leadership, indicating that while cooperation is on the rise, it remains a delicate balance. Both nations are keen on tightening their coordination against organized crime, but Mexico remains steadfast that any intelligence collaboration must honor its sovereignty and national priorities.
